Maurizio Cattelan - La Nona Ora (The Ninth Hour) (1999)

Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan creates an enormous full room installation just to show the pope being crushed to death by a meteorite. Italians were kind of pissed. Many others sort of chuckled. 1999.

"On Thursday, December 21st (2005?), Catholic members of Poland's parliament attacked Maurizio Cattelan's The Ninth Hour, a sculpture depicting Pope John Paul II lying on the ground after being struck by a meteorite, reports the Agence France-Presse.

On view at Warsaw's National-Gallery, Cattelan's provocative work had already occasioned much negative comment when the politicians removed the meteorite from the tableau and tried to stand up the figure of the pope."

If I were the artist, I would have felt so satisfied at this point. Watching those politicians make fools of themselves, attempting to stand a wax doll... babbling feverishly in Polish, no doubt! Mercy.
